Luang Prabang - Pak beng - OUDOMXAY - NONG KHIAW
DISTANCE: 235-275 km
Exploring Laos with a mountain bike is fantastic, even if you have limited time. This 4 day cycling tour through the northern part of the country takes you out into some remote areas north of Luang Prabang and combines cycling with other activities. You’ll experience the magic of the Mekong and Nam Ou Rivers by boat and roll along small side roads in the river valleys. It’s a great way to take in the distinctive landscapes of this part of the country on this medium-difficulty biking adventure tour in Laos
Day 1 | Boat ride from Luang Prabang to Pakbeng
The bikes will be put on board while you prepare yourself for a soft-starting adventure in Northern Laos. Few people have had the opportunity to do this. You’ll stay overnight in Pakbeng. Lunch will be served on board of the Mekong cruise boat.
Day 2 | Pakbeng – OUDOMXAY(70 km)
After a brief transfer by vehicle, we’ll be cycling in very rural Laos, an area inhabited by hill tribe villages who eke a meagre existence from the land. Along the way you will pass villages of Phu Thai, Thai Lu, Hmong, Thai Dam, Lao and Khamu. The people are very friendly and not yet tired of seeing tourists. We stop at weaving villages along the way, where you still see families sitting in the shade weaving on old looms. After cilimbing a 300 meter pass, a long descent brings you to Oudomxay the capital of the Oudomxay Province.
Day 3 | Oudomxay - Nong KHIAW (70-110 km)
After a 1 hour uphill transfer, you will start cycling at an altitude of 1300 m. Enjoy the great views and the daily life in the Hmong villages dominating this region. A long descent will bring you to Pak Mong, where we will have lunch. From Pak Mong, you cycle over a small tar road into the karst, the scenic lime stone mountains that surround Nong Khiaw. We stay overnight in a resort with fine views over the mountains and the Nam Ou River.
Day 4 | Nong KHIAW - Luang Prabang (95 km)
Flatter and better roads today will enable you to complete the longer distance to Luang Prabang. Only a few minor passes have to be climbed before you are riding along the banks of the Nam Ou river, with stunning views on huge mountain ranges. The last stage takes you through teakwood plantations before arriving inLuang Prabang.
